Welcome to an inspiring week with Maestro Martin Akerwall and Belgrade Chamber Orchestra.

This masterclass gives you 1050 minutes active time. It includes:

  • 140 minutes podium-time in front of Belgrade Chamber Orchestra including rehearsals and final concert
  • 15 sessions in conducting technique
  • podium-time in front of a piano duo
  • individual video analyzing
  • personal coaching,
  • individual feedback sessions
  • 2 lectures on topics related to your development and career as an artist and conductor.

The masterclass is open for 10-12 conductors, it has no age limit nor level-limit.

Orchestral Conductors Academy celebrates the Beethoven’s 250 anniversary with a masterclass dedicated to  all Beethoven´s 9 symphonies. In this masterclass you will be introduced to all must-know cornerstones for the conductor in all symphonies. Enjoy the Serbian summer and have fun being challenged in a non-competitive atmosphere while you immerse yourself in the symphonic universe of some of the most outstanding masterpieces. Refine your rehearsal technique and strengthen your artistically expression as a conductor while enhance your network with international fellow conductors.

We welcome you to an inspiring week in Belgrade City, known as the smaller version of Berlin and New York City. While you conduct Belgrade Chamber Orchestra enjoy your stay at the peak of the Serbian summer in one of the most important prehistoric cultures of Europe. The masterclass takes place at Dr Vojislav Vučković Music School in the center of Belgrade, Serbia. Maestro Akerwall is renowned as a sought-after teacher for conductors all over the world and has given masterclasses in USA, Finland, Latvia, Bulgaria and in Denmark. His teaching is rooted in the Finnish conducting tradition with world class conductors such as Jorma Panula, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka Pekka Sareste and Leif Segerstam. Akerwall’s teaching also gains benefit from his acquisition of the German conducting school as conductor at German theaters. He has a master in NLP, Hypnosis and Leadership. His many years of professional experience, psychological insight combined with his musical comprehensive and effective conducting technique makes his teaching extended, individualized, nuanced and differentiated. As a participant you will experience maestro Akerwall as a dynamic and intensive teacher who works with your individual skills and improvement from different approaches. Yet his principles and understanding in culture and the art of conducting gives you an progressive efficiently and instructive one-direction-experience.

A Repertoire
Beethoven Symphony 1 – 9

The minimum mandatory amount of repertoire is 3 movements of A and 2 movements of B repertoire. You are welcome to choose more of both repertoires.
All repertoire will be rehearsed during the masterclass with Belgrade Chamber Orchestra. To gain the maximum benefits from the course we recommend you prepare and study the complete repertoire prior to the start of the masterclass.


Participation fee:
€ 1200 active (140 minutes podium-time, 880 minutes additionally personal coaching/training including sessions in basic/advanced conducting technique, podium conducting a piano duo, individual video analyzing, personal coaching and individual feedback sessions. Fee also include the two lectures)

Audience: The masterclass is public and open for music students and everybody interested in classical symphonic music and the art of conducting.

The Masterclass takes place at Dr Vojislav Vučković Music school.The tuition focus during the masterclass will be on conducting technique, aspects of score analyzing, rhetoric communication and rehearsal techniques. We will also focus on psychological aspects of orchestral conducting, preparing yourself and the score for rehearsal and concert. One-hour personal coaching sessions will be given on request.

While participating in the masterclass explore the outspoken, adventurous, proud and audacious Belgrade. The gritty exuberance of this old city makes it one of the most happening cities in Europe with art nouveau masterpieces, and remnants of the Habsburg legacy contrast with Ottoman relics. Read more

The Masterclass takes place at Dr Vojislav VučkovićMusic school. We recommend to find your accommodation on Airbnb or one of the many nice hotels in the nearby. The Music school are located very near the center of downtown.

We record your rehearsals for the video sessions during the week. In order for us to record your rehearsals you need to bring your own microSD memorycard. You are welcome to bring you own camera and record the piano rehearsals and orchestra rehearsals you conduct.

A 60-minutes one-to-one conversation/coaching with Maestro Akerwall is possible at additional cost.

The course will be taught primarily in English or German and secondarily Swedish or Danish for Scandinavian participants.

The Belgrade Chamber Orchestra was established in 2018 with Martin Akerwall as its principal conductor. The orchestra consists of leading musicians from Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra and the elite of young musicians in Belgrade. The players pursue parallel careers as international soloists, members of eminent chamber groups, and as tutors and professors of music. The Belgrade Chamber Orchestra shares the culture and ideal with Orchestral Conductors Academy by being an active and supportive part of the masterclasses for conductors. The Belgrade Chamber Orchestra and Conductors Academy believe that true development of conductors only takes place through honest knowledge-sharing dialogue with the orchestra.

Orchestral Conductors Academy (OCA) reserves the right to changes at any time without notice. The masterclass is financed entirely on the fee from the participants. Your fee is completely refundable before the deadline. After the deadline we refund in case your place can be taken over by another applicant. In case OCA cancels the masterclass, OCA will refund paid fee at any time. Any additional costs such as flight, etc will not be refunded.
